As we watch the BP incident continue to unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, I am astounded by the news media and their coverage of the event. When word came of the disaster in the Gulf with the loss of lives, I was actually in Washington, D.C. visiting with our various state Representatives, Senators, and their staffs during our annual fly-in.

The late Eddie Chiles, founder and CEO of The Western Company of North America, a very large service company in the oil industry with 5,000 employees, had a lot to say about government’s intervention and control of our lives.

Over the years, the men and women who have worked in the oil and gas industry have always been known as an honest, hard working breed. We are proud of our work ethic, proud of what we’ve accomplished and proud of what we’ve been able to provide our nation in terms of energy resources. We have nothing to be ashamed of! However, we have much more work to do — educating the masses, one by one.

This same alarm is being heard throughout the country. From Washington, D.C., to every state and local government that produces oil, our voice is loud and is being heard. The oil industry and the people who work in the industry want to save jobs and the U.S. economy. Everyone needs to not only hear the alarm but to also get involved and stay involved in government — a government that is making decisions and laws that will affect our very lives and livelihoods.
